DJI Phantom 3 Advanced review.

The phantom has been around for a while now, and over the years, DJI have changed a lot of things, on each model variant....from the phantom 1 having a go-pro mount, to the phantom 2 being able to carry the 'zenmuse' gimbal, which stabilized the footage recorded on the camera. This gave it a more professional stance on the use of the drone, making it one of the most popular drones of all time.

When DJI announced they were launching a phantom 3, I was eager to try one out having owned the predecessors.

Thanks to the guys at wheelspin models, I have been given the chance to test fly and review one of the latest editions to the phantom family.

The '3' comes in three guises, the Professional, Advanced and the Standard, all of which still have the great GPS positioning system that they have always had, and the 'return to home' mode, which is essential on any drone these days.

The advanced that I am looking at will film at a maximum of 1080p@60fps, whereas the Pro will film at 4K and the Standard at 2.7K.

Now, I know what your thinking...the standard has a better image quality than the advanced but it's cheaper!? Yes that's true BUT, it is technically a Phantom 2, using the same transmitter from the 2 and the same WiFi transmission to relay the image at a very reduced range. The Advanced has a far better range, and the streaming can come in at 720p in real time over a possible 1.25mile distance! *

This range is only possible because it uses the 'lightbridge' technology that DJI developed originally as a stand alone unit, which still costs nearly £1000 today, and was one of the best range extenders on the market....and still is!
The lightbridge unit is situated at the back of the handset, allowing you to plug your phone or tablet into it via a USB port. It will only use your phone as a head up display and a monitor to relay the image from the lightbridge unit, which it receives from the lightbridge unit in the drone.

The Phantom 3 has improved GPS and a 'vision system' which they have taken from its more expensive big brother, the Inspire one.
The system allows flight in GPS-free areas and indoors by bouncing Visual and ultrasonic beams to
the ground beneath your Phantom 3, enabling it to identify its position and move accurately.

If your new to drones it also has a unique Beginner Mode which helps you learn how to fly in a safe, limited area. Your Phantom 3 can be set to fly at a limited distance and altitude from you, protecting your Phantom and making it automatically stay inside your desired limits.
This invisible, GPS-enabled “geofence” prevents you from accidentally flying into unwanted areas or obstacles, and helps you enjoy flying while learning at the same time.

Auto landing and auto take off make this the perfect drone to use, and not to mention the flight log data which is accessible through the DJI GO app.
This flight log data has limited access to the pilot....DJI have a wider view of your logs for the purpose of warranty claims etc, so if you try and pull the wool over their eyes with false claims of Phantoms dropping out the sky, they will know! That works both ways because they will also know if it's a genuine claim, and rectify or replace your drone. Piece of mind if you ask me!

The app has so much real time info it's like a midfield, but if you take your time and do your research you will soon understand everything that is displayed in front of you, and it all has a help you fly safely whilst having fun!

Overall the phantom 3 has become a drone of great technological advancement. It hovers perfectly still, it returns home every time, and the quality of the video that is captured is amazing. It gives you a far better perspective of the physical world.

The price of the Advanced comes in at £899, while the Pro is £1159, and the Standard is in at £649.99, all available from Wheelspin models.

The guys at Wheelspin have a vast knowledge of all things flight related and are happy to help at anytime! Give them a call, tell them Matt sent you!
